Interpretation and Readings

We tend to believe that we perceive the world as it is. Yet memory is selective, sensations emerge only to quickly recede, and perception operates within frameworks shaped by language and experience. What we accept as reality, therefore, is less an objectively given world than a constructed image, continually mediated and reconfigured through memory, sensation, and interpretation. ‘Interpretation and Readings’, featuring works by Hansol Noh, Maya Makino, and Jongwoo Ahn, brings together three distinct painterly practices that examine how memory, sensation, and perception are formed, altered, and translated into visual language. 

Chapter One: Eleven Artists. Eleven Balls. Eleven Homes.

I am delighted to announce my participation in Chapter One: Eleven Artists. Eleven Balls. Eleven Homes, an exhibition held at Atelier at Ideal Glass Studios in New York, organized by the IMAZ Foundation and curated by Javier Martin. I am truly honored to be part of this meaningful project, which brings together eleven artists and coincides with the 2026 FIFA World Cup, hosted across North America.

The works will be presented in a silent auction, with proceeds supporting the construction of homes for single mothers and their children in Quito, Ecuador, in partnership with the local organization CAEMBA.

Many thanks to IMAZ Foundation, Sami Deller, and Javier Martin for inviting me to participate in this meaningful project and for their warm support.

この度、iwao galleryでは、牧野真耶の個展「Aufheben」を開催いたします。

牧野はこれまで一貫して〝記憶〟という現象を主題に制作を続けてきました。雨の気配や夜の静けさといった日常の些細な感覚を、幼少期の記憶と結びついた原初的なイメージとして描き出します。その表現を支える重要な要素のひとつが、藍という染料です。幾層にも重なる藍の色彩は、支持体の内部へと染み込みながら、時間を内包するかのように画面に定着します。その揺らぎのある色合いは、記憶の曖昧さや移ろいやすさを静かに映し出しています。ミニマルな構成のなかに、人間が持つ普遍的な色彩の記憶を喚起する絵画です。

〝Aufheben（アウフヘーベン）〟は、哲学者ヘーゲルの用語として知られ、保存と消失、否定と継承といった相反する意味を併せ持つ概念です。記憶は呼び起こされるたびに再編され、現在の意識によって更新され続けます。本展の作品は、作家自身の記憶が立ち現れる直前の気配や、変容し続ける時間のあり方そのものを捉えたものです。鑑賞者もまた、どこか懐かしさを感じると同時に、いまこの瞬間の感覚として新たに編み直されるでしょう。

※Aufheben（アウフヘーベン）＝ドイツ語。1.持ち上げる・拾い上げる 2.保管する・取っておく 3.取り消す・無効にする。ヘーゲルが提唱した哲学用語（日本語では「止揚」と訳される）でもあり、いくつもの意味を同時にもつ特別な概念で、対立するもの同士がぶつかり合いながら、否定しつつも要素を残し、矛盾に折り合いをつけてより高いレベルへ発展していく。

アーティスト ステートメント

Aufheben

牧野真耶の絵画制作は、一貫して「記憶」を想起という行為を通して生成され続ける現象として捉えてきた。思い出は呼び起こされるたびに再編され、保存されると同時に変質する。そこに現れる像は、過去の出来事の再現ではなく、現在の意識によって更新された構造である。

これまでの個展「思い出と物語のあいだ」（2011、日本）、「Faded」（2022、ベルギー）、「Out of Focus」（2025、ベルギー）では、意図的・無意図的な想起において生じる鮮明さと曖昧さの共存、すなわち「思い出される瞬間の不確かさ」そのものが、ミニマルな抽象絵画として提示された。

本展「Aufheben」は、そうした記憶の現象学的な探究を一歩進め、記憶を主題とする段階から、認識が時間をどのように内包して立ち上がるのか、その状態そのものへと焦点を移す試みである。ここで参照される記憶は、もはや回帰される対象だけではなく、一度受け入れられ、内面化され、現在の感覚へと統合された状態として扱われる。

「Aufheben」という概念が示すように、本展における記憶は、保存と消失、否定と継承という相反する運動を同時に孕んでいる。過去は否定されることなく保持されるが、そのままの形では残らない。記憶は解体され、再配置され、結果として「過去に縛られない現在」を支える構造へと変容する。

展示される絵画は、具体的な記憶や出来事を示していない。それらは、想起のきっかけとなる現象を捉えた場面として提示されているーミニマルな構成や抑制された色彩は、保持されながら変容し、消失しながらなお作用し続けるという二重の運動の只中で、時間がまだ輪郭を結びきらない瞬間、あるいはすでに過去として遠のきつつあるその気配のなかで、わずかな不均衡のうちに像として現れる。

牧野真耶の作品は、無意図的に知覚した感覚から、瞬時に過去の風景が目の前に映し出される体験を絵画の中にキャプチャーし留めておくということを目的としている。夜の静けさ、雨の音、花の香り。これらの断片は、幼い頃の記憶を呼び起こし、作者がこれらの光景や感覚を意識するのと同じように、鑑賞者の頭の中で揮発した後、瞬時に消えるという体験をする。

牧野の絵画的実践の最も本質的な側面のひとつは、おそらく色の深度であろう。彼女は、胡粉を使った地塗り材で下塗りをしたパネルに一種類の染料を使ってさまざまな藍の色合いを表現する。藍は絵画の表面に留まっているのではなく、支持体に浸透している。それは、彼女が感情や記憶を瞬間的に思い出し、捉え、保存することを追求する際に、心に浸透していくこととリンクしていると言える。牧野にとって絵画とは、特定の表面に特定の材料を塗り重ねる行為だけではない。色彩が絵画の物質的な面を超越するように、支持体の奥から立ち現れる現象として捉えている。
